German technology competed out Porkkala
Degerby Igor museum, Inkoo
- 1.4.2025–31.12.2026
Why was the Soviet Porkkala base dismantled so rapidly? The answer was found outside Helsinki soon after the armistice.
Soon the Soviets found out that the Germans had built a demagnetization center on the island of Lonna very close to the sea-lane to Helsinki.
Only in 1953, the year Stalin died, the Soviet Union had enough capacity to build a corresponding one. As the location Lahemaa National Park on the Estonian coast, between Lake Lohja and Pärispea peninsula was chosen, by the deepest bay of the Gulf of Finland, Hara Laht. In this area by the Juminda peninsula large minefields had sunk very large numbers of Soviet craft.
