Togetherness with Estonia

Degerby Igor museum, Inkoo

  • 30.6.2022–

The Finnish and Estonian togetherness has traditionally expressed trade, change of ideas and culture along the shores of the Gulf of Finland.

In the 1930’s a substantial defence cooperation between Finland and Estonia was manifested by a cable between the Estonian fortress Naissaar and Finnish Makilo and in building up a submarine fleet and a naval mine barrier.

During WW2 the Soviet Union and Germany interchanged as rulers in the Baltic countries. At different times Estonians were enlisted in the Soviet Red Army and the German Wehrmacht.

In 1942-1943 about 3 400 Estonians escaped to Finland and joined the Finnish Army as Estonian volunteers (Soomepoisid = “Finnish boys”). They took part in the resistance battles on the Karelian isthmus in Summer of 1944.
Back home in Estonia the Soviet authorities persecuted them, effectively assisted by Finnish authorities, who provided the Soviet Union with data translated into Russian.
