Architect Alvar Aalto’s masterpiece, Villa Kokkonen, was built for composer Joonas Kokkonen (1921–1996) in 1969, next to Lake Tuusula. Villa Kokkonen is a unique building of international significance and one of the few private residences completed during Aalto’s lifetime. This modern wood-framed house was designed to function as both a home and a studio. The heart of the villa is on the studio, which was designed with Kokkonen’s grand piano in mind. The furniture mostly consists of Artek pieces, but there are also one-of-a-kind designs specially made for Villa Kokkonen. The interior decoration includes stage props from Joonas Kokkonen’s best known opera, "The Last Temptations."
Finnish composer Joonas Kokkonen was among the most influential figures of Finnish classical music. He composed music for orchestra, including four symphonies, chamber music, a cello concerto, and choir and piano music.
Kokkonen lived in Villa Kokkonen for 27 years until his death in 1996. In 1998, the city of Järvenpää bought the villa and its furnishings. Villa Kokkonen is currently undergoing renovation and will be opened to the public in 2024.
