Preparedness - In safe hands

How did Finns cope with the various consequences of war? Civil defence shelters were built, consumption was rationed, and entire cities were blacked out. At the same time, shortages taught people to be thrifty, reuse what they had and appreciate the resources provided by nature. Ingenuity and hard work helped solve many challenges, while the importance of working together was immense. During the war years, women’s role in the labour market changed dramatically, and even children had to contribute to the war effort.

The exhibition also looks at preparedness today from the perspective of everyday life and ordinary people. Do you know, for example, what to do during a power outage, what the general emergency warning signal sounds like, or what should be included in a home emergency supply? And what can individuals and communities today learn from previous generations? The exhibition’s interactive elements invite both children and adults to try things out and explore for themselves.
