Momentti (Gallery)

Momentti presents Jyväskylä’s local graffiti culture and its practitioners through a contemporary lens. The exhibition is part of Graffiti as Art and Profession, a project supported by the Finnish Heritage Agency. The project seeks to document Jyväskylä’s graffiti culture, strengthen young artists’ identities, and create connections between the art museum, youth work and street art communities.

The artworks on display have been created by artists participating in the project. Alongside the works, photographs, videos and other forms of documentation provide insight into the contexts, working processes and communal practices that shape graffiti culture. Together, they offer a view into the world of graffiti from the perspective of those who create it.

The exhibition approaches graffiti as an integral part of urban culture and visual cultural heritage. It highlights graffiti not only as a form of self-expression, but also as a committed artistic practice that can provide pathways into a professional career in the visual arts.

The exhibition has been developed in close collaboration with the participating artists. Throughout the project, they have documented their own practices, mapped graffiti sites across Jyväskylä and recorded aspects of the local graffiti scene for future generations. This process has resulted in a distinctive exhibition in which graffiti artists are not merely the subjects of documentation, but active participants in the interpretation and preservation of their own cultural heritage within the museum.

Momentti invites audiences to encounter graffiti as art, culture and a vital part of Jyväskylä’s contemporary urban landscape.
