WeeGee Reads: Heikki Valkama
The WeeGee Exhibition Centre, Espoo
- 11.12.2024 (17.30-19.00)
This December, WeeGee Reads takes us to the landscapes of Japan, led by Heikki Valkama!
Heikki Valkama is a journalist, author, and expert on Japanese culture. He has written several crime novels set in Japan, worked as a translator, and recently authored books about Japanese food culture. His book trilogy Okazu-Okashi-Oishii introduces readers to a wide selection of Japanese cuisine, from vegetable-focused temple food to sweets.
At WeeGee Reads, we’ll not only explore Valkama’s books but also Japan as a cultural phenomenon. It feels like everyone is traveling to Japan right now, especially urban thirty-somethings. Why now, and what makes Japan so appealing? What are Valkama’s favorite places in Japan? Is it worth paying almost triple the price to visit during cherry blossom season, or are there other great times to go?
With Christmas approaching, we’ll also consider how Japanese flavors could enhance the holiday table. Valkama will be interviewed by Meri Jaakola, cultural producer at the Exhibition Center WeeGee and an enthusiast of Japanese culture. During the event, Valkama’s latest book, Oishii – Everyday Japanese Food, will be available for purchase—a great gift idea!
Come alone or bring a friend to enjoy literature, the architecture of the former printing house, and the delights of Café Zoceria, along with special event offers, on Wednesday, December 11, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. The museums at the WeeGee Exhibition Center offer free entry starting at 3:00 PM! The event will take place in Café Zoceria, located in WeeGee’s lobby.
Schedule:
5:30 PM Heikki Valkama interviewed by Meri Jaakola on Japanese themes
6:00 PM Silent Book Club – read a book related to the theme together
6:30 PM Lightly facilitated discussions on the topics raised
What is a Silent Book Club?
The Silent Book Club is an event concept for book lovers who want to read in peace but still together. The concept is simple: gather in a group, open a book, and immerse yourself in it for a set period. WeeGee Reads events revolve around a loose theme, and we encourage participants to bring a book that fits the theme. However, this is entirely optional—you are free to read whatever you like. After the reading session, there’s a discussion about what was just read.
We’ll share themed reading recommendations, which you can find on the social media channels of Exhibition Center WeeGee and Teos.
