Impact Crater of Lake Summanen
Saarijärvi Museum, Stone Age Village, Saarijärvi
- 11.6.2019–
The exhibition on the impact crater of Lake Summanen, a water body located next to the Stone Age Village, tells the story of the current 2.6 kilometer wide landform. The crater below the lake was proven to be an impact crater in 2018, but indications of its origin were obtained as early as the turn of the millennium. One of the boulders containing shatter cones is displayed in the exhibition. The boulder, found near the lake, allowed researchers to conclude that Summanen does indeed have the 12th impact crater found in Finland.
The boulder acquired by Lannevesi Sampo Youth Association comes from the field of Jouni and Timo Tikka, south of Summasjärvi. The celestial body that impacted the lake has naturally left the largest traces in the nearby terrain, but the intensity of the impact has shaken the earth as far as southern Finland.
The texts of the exhibition are by Teemu Öhman, PhD, The Arctic Planetary Research Institute. The layout and illustrations are by Saarijärvi Museum.
