Yli-Jaakheikki's smoke hut

One of the most popular summer attractions in Kemi, the Yli-Jaakheikki smoke hut, is open from June 26th to August 11th, 2024, from Wednesday to Saturday, 12 pm to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 12 pm to 4 pm.

The smoke cabin was a typical Finnish form of housing from the Middle Ages until the 1800s. Kemi's Yli-Jaakheikki smoke cabin is now in its third life in Kemi's Meripuisto. Its story began as the home of pioneers in Muurola in 1796, from where it was moved in the 1830s to Alapaakkola Maula village to serve as a residential building for a farm. In the early 1950s, it was relocated to its current location in Kemi's Meripuisto for use as a museum. Since then, it has served visitors every summer and has managed to maintain its popularity among Kemi's attractions. In recent years, the cabin has been visited by tourists from abroad, and the annual number of visitors has repeatedly broken records. We are expecting a large number of visitors for this season as well.

It is worth coming to experience the idyllic atmosphere of the smoke cabin, even if you have visited in previous summers. The stories of people's lives in the past, combined with our region's rich cultural heritage, guarantee an interesting museum experience in a unique setting.

There is a knowledgeable guide on-site to share the history of the cabin and traditional Finnish way of life. Admission to the hut is free.
