Pori Art Museum

28100 Pori

A bold and experimental museum of contemporary art.

Pori Art Museum has been famous for its international contemporary art exhibitions for nearly four decades and has from the beginning focused on the new phenomena of the visual arts.

Pori Art Museum was founded in 1981 around Professor Maire Gullichsens art collection. It has a background in the tradition of modern art but is focused in its exhibitions and publications on contemporary art.

Starting in the early nineties, the museum has also focused on developing the possibilities of art pedagogy based on contemporary art. Educational Services help clients of all ages to find new perspectives on art and visual culture. As the regional art museum in Satakunta, the museum hosts large collections and archives of modern and contemporary art.

Pori Art Museum is situated in the centre of the town by the river Kokemki, in the oldest part of
the city of Pori. Exhibition spaces are unique in Finland. It resides in an old ware- and weighhouse originally built for the use of the customs in 1858 - 1860. Also a stone cellar dating back to the 17th century is preserved as part of the architectural structure.
