Juhani Aho Museum
Ouluntie 37,
74160 Iisalmi
Early years of Finland's first professional author and Nobel candidate Juhani Aho, in an old rectory at the historical Koljonvirta area.
The museum, situated in the little parsonage of Iisalmi, is devoted to Juhani Aho (1861-1921), Finland’s first professional writer and Nobel-candidate for sixteen times. Juhani Aho is known as a skillful portrayer of Finnish mindset and important developer of Finnish literature as well as radical journalist during his time.
In our main exhibition, our expert guides will lead you to the little parsonage of Iisalmi, which was Juhani’s home during his childhood. They will tell you how his background and experiences influenced his works and what effect his writings had on Finnish society. Our additional changing exhibitions go further to the time period and explain different phenomenons centered on Juhani Aho.
Our museum is an unique combination of personal history of central Finnish writer, cultural history of the priest class and military history of Finland since the museum is situated in historical location of Koljonvirta, which was a battlefield in Finnish War (1808-1809). Our 1,5 km long history trail presents positions of the battle and major events as well as ordinary life of soldiers.
