Opened as a museum in 1987, Tamminiemi Villa was the official residence of Presidents Ryti, Mannerheim and Kekkonen and the stage of many political negotiations and resolutions. However, Tamminiemi is best known for the 25-year presidency of Urho Kekkonen, during which time the name of Tamminiemi became a concept in its own right in Finnish political life and vocabulary.
After the death of Kekkonen, Tamminiemi was re-opened as a museum and, today, visitors can experience the villa just as it was in the 1970s, when the presidential couple still lived there. The famous thick-rimmed glasses of the President rest on the study desk. The President’s favourite chair Karuselli, designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro, where he enjoyed sitting while watching TV, can be found upstairs.
The highly popular daily guided tours in Finnish allow you to hear about the history of Tamminiemi with a particular focus on Urho Kekkonen’s time in the house – not forgetting the famous sauna and Finnish design. More information about the guided tours and their availability in different languages can be found on our website.
The Tamminiemi museum café, Café Adjutant, welcomes visitors for lunch or a cup of coffee all year round. The café terrace is open in the summer, offering a beautiful maritime view to the waters of Seurasaarenselkä.
