Ysäri exhibition

A recession looms over the early part of the period, giving way to a boom and an IT bubble by the end of the decade. The Soviet Union that people had come to see as a permanent presence disappears from the world map. Finns vote to join the European Union and immigration adds an international flavour to Finland.

The standard of living increases. Homes begin to have computers and internet connections and having two cars is no longer a rarity. International retail chains, continental cafés and ethnic restaurants appear on the streets of Finnish cities. Shopping centres attract consumers, and some shops open their doors on Sundays. Thanks to new shops, television channels and programmes, Finns have more music and fashion available to them than ever before. The whole nation still gathers in front of the television at the same time to watch everybody’s favourite shows. When the 90s comes to an end, an entire millennium comes to a close.
