Curator’s lecture: Claudia de Brün – Heracles, Achilles and their companions

Heracles is associated with a huge number of stories, scenes from his childhood, his 12 labours, and much more. Heracles-themed series were extremely popular, for example, during the Renaissance, since they portrayed a paradigm of strength and virtue. The most famous story from Antiquity is the myth of the Trojan War.

These hero tales inspired Greek pottery painters and sculptors, and have been depicted frequently ever since. Artworks based on ancient stories sometimes keep to the imagery of their own time, but are often modelled on ancient exemplars.
