The icebreaker Tarmo (1907) and lightship Kemi (1901) are open in the summertime at Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka.
Built in England in 1907, Tarmo was the Grand Duchy of Finland’s third icebreaker upon its completion. During the First World War, Tarmo served in the Baltic Fleet of the Imperial Russian Navy, assisting naval ships and troop transportations. During the Winter War, the icebreakers were armed and assigned to the Finnish Defence Forces. Tarmo remained in use until 1970 after which the decision was made to restore the ship into a museum ship. The restoration was carried out at Kotka Shipyard between 1990 and 1992.
The Kemi is the last lightship to have operated in Finland. The ship, which was completed in Pori in 1901, secured navigation over the course of decades in various shoals on the Finnish coast. The most recent place the ship was stationed in was Kemi, where its beacon blinked until 1974.
