Our next exhibition, Tar!, explores the multifaceted history of pine tar.
Pine tar is a central part of Kainuu’s history. For decades, it offered a way to make a living for local people. However, tar making has significantly and permanently altered landscapes. It was also intertwined with harmful structures.
The Tar! exhibition takes a look at tar making and tar transportation in Kainuu from multiple perspectives and disciplines. What did a literary tar-rowing journey from Kuhmo to Oulu in the 1880s look like, according to Teuvo Pakkala?

The exhibition is open at Kainuu Museum from June 23, 2026, to January 9, 2027. Address: Asemakatu 4. Free entry.
The exhibition is a part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture year.
