Women Writers in Finland

There have been literary women since the 19th century. At first, people’s attitudes towards women authoring books were suspicious and belittling. In late 19th and early 20th century, women’s role in the society was changing. Women were still primarily seen as mothers and wives. Little by little women started occupying new professions and study in universities, and the feminist movement began to gain in popularity. Women writers had an important role in social movements advocating for political rights for women as well as improving possibilities for work and education.
