Liisi Beckmann

Liisi Beckmann (1924–2004) had a successful career as a designer in Italy during the 1950s–1970s and is known, among other things, for the Karelia chair, which is highly sought after by collectors. Ars Nova’s exhibition is the first extensive showing of her visual art in a museum, showcasing an artist who steadfastly trod her own path at a time when the voices of female artists were often overlooked.

The exhibition features more than a hundred works of art created using different techniques, giving everyday materials a new lease on life. In the spirit of the Arte Povera movement of 1960s Italy, Beckmann incorporated found and recycled materials, along with paper-based techniques, into her work. In her art, Beckmann observed humanity, womanhood and sexual liberation.

Beckmann’s works and designs have been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA in New York, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, and Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Her diverse artistic work encompasses painting and sculpture as well as graphic art, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, and lighting design.
