Radio – 100 Years in Jakobstad

The Malm House, Museum of Jakobstad, Pietarsaari

  • 30.1.2026–3.5.2026

This exhibition tells the story of the history of radio in Jakobstad, with a focus on objects and photographs from the museum’s collections.

The exhibition traces the development of radio in Jakobstad from its early breakthrough, when Mellersta Österbottens radioförening was founded and the first local broadcasts were made from the fire station. The activity soon moved to Nynäsbacken, which became a central site in the city’s radio history for several decades.

Later, the station became part of Rundradion (Yle), leading to organizational changes, the construction of a new station building at Nynäsbacken, and the introduction of Finnish-language programmes. Radio in Jakobstad developed into a bilingual service combining local and national programming.

After the war, new technology and regional radio in Österbotten brought further changes. Local broadcasts continued under new names—Radio Österbotten and later Vega Österbotten. Today, radio activity lives on in modern facilities in the city centre.
