Liisa Hietanen - Turns

Tampere Art Museum, Tampere

  • 26.2.2022–22.5.2022

Sculptor Liisa Hietanen from Hmeenkyr (b.1981, Lohja) depicts everyday objects and residents of Hmeenkyr in her crocheted and knitted sculptures that she calls Villagers.

The models for the works have been discovered during everyday encounters and places such as the library or on the way home while walking a dog.

The key characteristic of Liisa Hietanens working method is slowly meeting and getting to know the models during the process. Finishing a single work requires turning the crocheted work in ones hands hundreds or even thousands of times during the working process. The title of the exhibition, Turns, refers to this as well as the turns in human life depicted by Hietanen in her works. After they have been finished, her works are always first displayed in public for local residents in places such as cafeterias, florists shops or home electronics shops.

Liisa Hietanen has attracted international attention, and Turns is her first private exhibition in a museum. It is a continuation of the series of exhibitions of Pirkanmaa artists at the Tampere Art Museum.
