VB Photographic Center brings a whiff of Atlantic air into Kuopio. Russian Vladimir Brylyakov has photographed the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, in his own special and unique way, joining pictures together and creating new kinds of landscapes and streets by utilizing his eye as a movie cameraman.

During Cannes film festival in 1992, Russian movie cameraman Vladimir Brylyakov was invited to Lisbon to film the movie of a Portuguese director. While in the city, Brylyakov fell in love with its beauty, looking at it especially from a movie-esque and photographic point of view. When Brylyakov was then invited to join the photo exhibition “Photography Month” in Lisbon in 1993, he had a lot of free time between his work assignments for the exhibition, and he couldn’t resist photographing Lisbon for his own pleasure.

Although Brylyakov just and just had time to develop the pictures he had taken when he returned home, he found the negatives of the exhibition again only in the year 2016. It was then that he began to scan the negatives and sort them out, at the same time creating stories about the places they showcased in his mind. A desire to publish the pictures as an exhibition and a book as born from the process.

With his photographs, Brylyakov wanted to showcase Lisbon especially as a location to film movies. Brylyakov thought it such a shame that Lisbon hasn’t become the meeting place of neorealistic filmmakers. In his exhibition, he has wanted to change this aspect and bring forward the beauty of the city. In the pictures he has taken, he indeed focused on places that he thought could become suitable locations for filming movies.

In the pictures of his exhibition Brylyakov has used his creativity, as the pictures don’t always present the truth. Not all streets of the photographs really exist and they have actually been born through joining certain pictures together and editing them into a single unit. For Brylyakov, what was more important than the truth was to tell a story through pictures that the viewer can interpret themselves and tell themselves. He has also used the panorama technique in his pictures, where the viewer’s eyes almost without conscious desire travel from one end of the picture to the other. Both of these techniques are rooted in his work as a movie cameraman.
