Tommi Toija – Self-images
Featuring sculptures, wood carvings and drawings, exhibition takes a broad look at Tommi Toija’s most recent works, complemented by a selection of earlier pieces.
At this exhibition, each step you take will bring you deeper into a world inhabited by curiously large-headed boys with wondering eyes. With Self-images, artist Tommi Toija (1974–) will be assembling an immersive experience for visitors to Hämeenlinna Art Museum. The works in this exhibition consist of a series of self-images or self-portraits, but they also act as a study of present-day humankind that portrays people marvelling at the world around them.
The exhibition invites you to throw yourself in and to discover new common ground. Although Toija’s figures are often described as cute and endearing, they are not always easy on the eye. Unflinchingly, they reflect life’s harsher realities, including moments of fear and anxiety. Accessible and inclusive, they convey a profound sense of humanity.
