Mobilia’s new exhibition takes visitors on a journey to celebrate Finland’s Ice Hockey World Championship victory, browse flea markets, and explore changes in the car trade. At the beginning of the 1990s, Finland was in the midst of a deep economic recession. Businesses collapsed, and hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs. At the same time, the decade marked a major technological turning point: towards its end, Nokia rose to become the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer and a driving force of the Finnish economy.

The exhibition immerses visitors in this decade of transformation through its vehicles and cultural phenomena. Despite the recession, several major motorway projects were launched. Environmental considerations also began to play a role in road construction, and the habitats of protected plants and animals could even alter the routes of major roads. Roadside rest areas were developed to improve comfort for travellers.

The fashion of the 1990s ranged from colourful tracksuits and all-concealing fanny packs to flannel shirts, oversized jeans, and sweatpants. The exhibition captures the atmosphere of the era with a shopping mall setting and iconic 90s music.
