Monikulttuurikalenteri2026: Light for Vesak: Making Lanterns

The workshop introduces a calm way of working with light, shape, and steady handcraft. In May we celebrate vesak and usually together we make lanterns. Participants can learn a few classic Vesak lantern forms, including the atapattama and other simple designs that suit the time available. Also bit about other festivals in Sri Lanka through videos. Thus, the session offers short notes on the cultural background to give context. Each person builds a lantern that glows warmly when finished. The steps are clear enough for beginners to follow with confidence. The workshop is held in the Satula-space on February 15th from 1 PM to 4 PM and it is free of charge.

Children under 10 can participate together with an adult. You do not need to bring materials or tools with you. A small bag for carrying the finished lantern may be helpful but is not required. Registration takes place at the museum on the workshop day. Participants will be accepted in the order of registration. The number of spots is limited.

The art workshop is held by Inosha Sugathapala who is a Sri Lankan cultural persona living in Oulu.
