Fredagar på Sibbe: Ánnámáret
The Sibelius Museum, Turku
- 7.2.2025 (19.00–20.00)
Ánnámáret gets inspiration to her music from the arctic nature in Sápmi and the Sámi culture and way of living.
Ánnámáret – Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman, is a musician and a yoiker who belongs to the Arctic indigenous people Sámi. Her unique voice and yoik interpretation are directly descended from the nomadic culture of her ancestors, the Reindeer Sámi.
In recent years, Ánnámáret has researched the yoik tradition of her family by studying old archive recordings. As a result of this work, she with her multi artistic group created the multi-form work of art called Nieguid duovdagat – Dreamscapes, in which yoik, the sound of the Carelian bowed lyre jouhikko and organic electronic music are accompanied with video art. The Dreamscapes album brought Ánnámáret to the attention of the world music scene and Ánnámáret and her group were selected as official Womex 2023 showcase artist.
Ánnámáret gets inspiration to her music from the arctic nature in Sápmi and the Sámi culture and way of living. She makes music and lives on the tundra with her family who are reindeer-herders. Ánnámáret’s strength as an artist springs from having grown up between two cultures and, thus, in understanding these cultures and their collisions and similarities.
August 2024 Ánnámáret released an album that reconciles the ancient Sámi worldview with the present day and asks where are the places of worship of this time? Ánnámáret joins the ancient gods and witches in this time.
The music on the album Bálvvosbáiki combines the old traditional Sámi yoiking and the old Karelian/Estonian tradition of the jouhikko bowed lyre with a completely new electronic soundscape. It is the result of a collaboration between musicians Ánnámáret (yoik), Ilkka Heinonen (jouhikko) and Turkka Inkilä (electronic music). The music on the album is further complemented by video art created by media artist Marja Viitahuhta. The working group’s Sámi-Finnish multi-artistic collaboration has received international attention and the anticipated album will continue the collaboration that has been in place since 2019. Ánnámáret’s yoiks or luohtis, are the starting point for the album and video art.
