Miners and mines

Gold Prospector Museum, Sodankylä

  • 1.7.2024–2.5.2025

“Miners and mines – WWII and Lapland gold” temporary exhibition tells what kind of effects wartime had on gold prospecting.

During WWII gold prospecting continued in Lapland till the beginning of Lapland War. Prospecting went on as long as possible in the areas already known auriferous. Gold was also an additional income in tough times.

After the war, many veterans came to the gold fields, some of them were at timber sites first. Women came to work as cooks, and many used their spare time for prospecting, too. Those who came from south, stayed few summers, or eventually rest of their lives in Lapland. Some local veterans and civilians were part of gold fields either by prospecting themselves, providing groceries, working as cooks etc.

The timespan of the exhibition is WWII and few years before and after the war. The focus is on wartime effects on people’s lives who were involved in gold prospecting.

The exhibition is included in entrance fee.
