In the fall of 1955, however, the winds had changed and the Porkkala area was handed back in January 1956.
The Russians enabled the ants´ arena
The main building had a dry toilet hole in the floor, but was otherwise in a pretty good condition.
- The Russians had reshaped the terrain, Marita Rosengren states and tells that Kasaberget was totally bare and burned to ashes.
Half of Långberget was bare, but Marita’s husband Rainer Rosengren used this fact to his advantage.
- He built an arena with a diameter of approximately five meters, this enabled to study how ants orientate. In the arena the ants solely saw the sky and it proved that they were able to relate to the landmarks installed there. This supplied the basis for PhD thesis. A study like this had otherwise been impossible to conduct in Southern Finland without the assistance of the Russians.
