The Manor on the King´s Road
Espoo City Museum, KAMU, Espoo
- 26.10.2023–1.6.2025
The exhibition tells about the Espoo Manor´s long and interesting history, about its owners and the people who worked there.
The Espoo Manor is the most significant manor in Espoo and it was once one of the largest manors in Finland. Espoo Manor was founded at the behest of King Gustav Vasa in 1556. The village of Espåby, which was incorporated into the manor, has given its name to the whole of Espoo. Today, the manor functions as a rentable party venue and it is privately owned.
The various stages of the manor are highlighted through descriptions of the people who lived and worked at the manor. Objects from KAMU's object collection and original source material from Espoo Manor illustrate life on the manor and the changes that took place over the centuries.
New research findings are highlighted in the exhibition and they are presented in both a visual and experiential way. The exhibition is planned visually so that outdoor and indoor spaces vary. Videos where history comes to life bring the visitor closer to the everyday life and chores of the people on the farm. The soundscape in the exhibition supports storytelling on different levels. Espoo Manor is in focus. The exhibition highlights the manor's importance as a functioning and well-managed farm and local employer, but also the manor's importance as a nationally significant stage for culture and politics.
“The manor on the map” - touch screen application shows the many changes that have taken place throughout the centuries. Using the application, maps and animated landscapes are opened on the chart table for closer inspection. The application is made by OiOi Collective Oy. The exhibition and space planning as well as the graphic appearance are made by Pentagon Design Oy.
The exhibition is part of the Espoonkartano project, in connection with which a book is also published. The book is published in both Finnish and Swedish.
A diverse program and various events are arranged in connection with the exhibition. Guide bookings and inquiries can be directed to KAMU's info tel. (09) 816 57052 Tue-Sun 11am-5pm.
The Espoonkartano project has received support from the Swedish Cultural Foundation.
