Tales of the primeval rock – From the ice age to the present day
Vantaa City Museum, Vantaa
- 16.9.2023–25.2.2024
In the course of thousands of years, this rock has had time to wonder about the goings on of various tribes and changes taking place in the environment. The exhibition is based on the children's book of the same name.
"I have seen happiness and sorrow, hatred and love, newcomers and species gone extinct. A long time has passed and countless generations of people have wandered about. I have heard many different languages. Some of them have disappeared completely, but in all languages I have had a name.
I am going to stay where I am for a long time, for I am in no hurry. I have been watching the humans for as long as they have been around. Now I want to tell you what I have seen. I am a small hill which people call the Stenkulla rock."
Stenkullan kallio (“Stenkulla rock”) is situated in Hakkila, in Vantaa, along Keravanjoki (The Kerava River). The rock's history spans from the Ice Age to the present. In the course of thousands of years, this rock has had time to wonder about the goings on of various tribes and changes taking place in the environment.
Vantaa City Museum has implemented a plain-language exhibition, based on the picture book Ikikallion tarinoita – mammuteista meidän aikaamme (Tales of the primeval rock - From the ice age to the present day). You can familiarize yourself with the story also in Finnish, Swedish, and English. The story was written by the museum's archaeologist Andreas Koivisto and illustrated by Tom Björklund, an artist specialized in prehistory. On exhibit are also archaeological artifacts—both prehistoric and historic—found in the area of Vantaa.
