Solbo - An Artists' House in Hyvinkää

Hyvinkää’s Artists’ House, which is today known as Solbo, welcomed its first residents in 1968. The City of Hyvinkää, which played a major role in the establishment of the Artists’ House, rented the property to the Artists’ Association of Finland, which then rented spaces in it to artists. The house still serves as a residence and studio space for artists. Over the decades, the house has been a home to 23 artists, who have been passionate about their art and have helped shape cultural life in Hyvinkää.

The building offers accommodation and studio spaces to four artists and their families. The house has attracted both newly qualified and more experienced artists to Hyvinkää, for whom finding a good studio space has offered the opportunity to focus on art. For their part, the residents of the Artists’ House have enlivened Hyvinkää’s cultural life with art exhibitions and events, for example. Many of them have also been active in Finland’s cultural politics and trade organisation activities. As a result of the Artists’ House, Hyvinkää has become known as a town that supports fine arts in particular.

Hyvinkää Art Museum’s new exhibition, curated by art historian Merja Ilola, offers visitors an opportunity the explore the range of art created under Solbo’s roof.
