Jacopo Bassano – Venetian Renaissance Master
Sinebrychoff Art Museum, Helsinki
- 12.9.2024–12.1.2025
Jacopo Bassano (c. 1515–1592) is one of the most important painters of the Venetian Renaissance. He was a virtuoso master of colour and light and a creator of pastoral paintings with biblical motifs.
This monographic exhibition is the first extensive presentation of Jacopo Bassano’s work to be shown in Europe outside of Italy. It includes paintings for private collectors and public works painted on church altars.
One theme of the exhibition is the biblical pastoral paintings, in which the depiction of the landscape and light, as well as naturalistic details, are central to the treatment of the subject. In Jacopo’s paintings, animals are often the protagonists, and some of Jacopo’s works depicting dogs can be seen as real portraits.
Jacopo Bassano spent most of his career in the workshop founded by his father, which he himself ran successfully from 1539 onwards. The workshop’s output was varied, and clients included both the nobility and commoners. In the traditional Venetian manner the workshop was a family business, in which Jacopo was assisted by his four sons.
This exhibition, produced by the Sinebrychoff Art Museum, is a result of an extensive international collaboration. It comprises a total of 34 paintings. The curators are researchers specialising in Jacopo Bassano: Dr Kirsi Eskelinen, Director, Sinebrychoff Art Museum, and Dr Claudia Caramanna.
