Helena Kaikkonen – The Horizon of Longing

Exhibition is themed around and inspired by the parallels between the cycle of seasons and the stages of human life.

The Oulu-based textile artist Helena Kaikkonen's (1959–) exhibition is themed around and inspired by the parallels between the cycle of seasons and the stages of human life. Change and repetition give the rhythm to both nature and everyday life; time passes but nothing is ever final or complete.

Living in the north has a strong influence on Kaikkonen's material-based working methods. Every year, the snows of wintertime hide the secret of new life beneath them. Natural materials, such as leaves, branches, roots and various found objects, collected from the beaches and the forests of the region around Oulu and from many different parts of Finland, open spaces for the subconscious and the coincidental. It is thrilling to see what kind of new installations and combinations have been created by the artist recycling her stores of textiles and dismantling her old installations in her studio in the Old Wool Factory of Pikisaari in Oulu. "Where I have found my materials and where they come from, the traces of time they carry and how delicate they feel are very important to me. I have often said that I think with my hands. The textures of the materials in my fingertips guide my thoughts."
