Traditional decorative painting and fireplaces in Västerbotten and Ostrobothnia
The exhibition showcases the joy of color and beautiful stencil art that has been hidden in the walls on both sides of the Gulf of Bothnia. The fireplace is highlighted as the heart of the home. It was when the chimney was installed that it became possible to begin decorating our cottages.
The exhibition is the result of a survey of ornamentally painted interiors and fireplaces conducted as part of the Leader projects “Ostrobothnian Architectural Heritage—A Collaborative Project with Västerbotten” (Stundars) and “Old Farms and Cultural Heritage—A Resource for Västerbotten”
(Vindeln Local History Museum, Västerbotten Museum, and Skellefteå Museum).
In Ostrobothnia, the survey has focused on the Swedish-speaking rural areas between Närpes and Nykarleby. In Västerbotten, the survey was conducted earlier and covers the entire countryside.
