The Flying Garden working group’s film performance reflects on the history of houseplants and our everyday relationships with tropical plants kept indoors. The film is shown on 8mm film, which has been developed using plant chemicals from coffee consumed during the creation of the work and roasted in Eurajoki. Instead of a conventional film experience, the screening expands into a performance experienced in the moment.

The Flying Garden art project took place during the summer of 2025 in various locations in Satakunta. Events were held at Foucault’s Pendulum in Eurajoki, the Luvia Local History Museum, and Reposaari in Pori. Artists Jönssi Heikkinen, Uljas Kaitala, Victoria Torboli, and Eero Yli-Vakkuri collected people’s houseplants, which were placed in temporary gardens built in public spaces and raised with cargo lines. The work deals with the history of houseplants and the communities they create around them. The process was recorded on 8mm film, which has been edited into a performative film screening about the journeys of plants and flying gardens.
