April Jazz Club + WeeGee: Mortal Lease

Mortal Lease interprets Josefiina Vannesluoma's compositions to the poems of Edith Wharton (1862-1937). The ensemble takes its name from the 1909 sonnet series Mortal Lease, which, interpreted as autobiographical, describes Wharton's romance in her mature years and the resulting tensions in her search for meaning in life. Lyrical metaphors spark into symphonic scenes in the jazz band's treatment. The band will release its debut album in October 2023 via Flame Jazz Records. In addition to the piano trio accompanying Vannesluoma, the concert will feature Sampo Kasuris on alto flute, tenor saxophone and clarinet.
