Visual artist Sanni Weckman (b. 1993) combines various textile techniques in her work. She often starts from a photograph, translating its subject into a new form. Weckman uses soft, familiar material with surprising results. The techniques she uses soften the outlines of her characters. From a distance, you can see a slight smile on a face or the folds of festive clothes. At a closer look, the textile technique becomes apparent as you can see the lines of yarn on the surface. Our haptic or touch-based memory tells us how the surface would feel against the skin. Fabrics touch us throughout our lives, from our very first moments to the last. The Finnish ryijy, for example, is a familiar home textile that carries a certain nostalgia and may remind you of your grandmother’s house. The softness pulls you in and creates a sense of security.
