Sasha Huber: YOU NAME IT
Turku Art Museum, Turku
- 9.6.2023–27.8.2023
Sasha Huber (b. 1975) is a Helsinki-based artist and researcher with Swiss-Haitian roots.
She explores how colonial histories are imprinted into the landscape through naming and acts of remembrance – asking who and what we memorialise, and more importantly how we do so. YOU NAME IT brings together over a decade of Huber’s work including video, photography, performance, installations, and staple portraiture. Her body of work is prompted by the cultural and political activist campaign Demounting Louis Agassiz, which seeks to redress the racist legacy of the Swiss-born naturalist and glaciologist Louis Agassiz (1807–1873). Through her work, Huber stages what she calls reparative interventions which challenge racist histories and archives.
YOU NAME IT is initiated, organized, and circulated by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, CA; in collaboration with Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam, NL; Autograph in London, UK; Turku Art Museum, FI and Ferme-Asile Centre Artistique et Culturel, Sion, CH.
Sasha Huber’s work has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland. The exhibition at the Turku Art Museum is supported by the Finnish Heritage Agency.
