The exhibition Mirage has its origins in the examination of the illusion of the freedom of a dream built within the landscape concept.
The work explores the legacy of a tradition born on the west coast of the United States of America in the middle of the 19th century, where the landscape is located at a distance from the viewer. The starting point of the work is a three-week road trip to the states of California, Nevada and Arizona on the west coast of the United States at the turn of 2019-2020, during which Pennanen photographed and studied the places she encountered on the way.
She focused on describing the part of the landscape that was left out of focus and distanced in classic landscape photography, including the land, vegetation and sky. Pennanen's aim was to get closer to the experience of being in a place physically and to make works that would adapt to the overall essence of the place, which exceeds the limits of human vision.
The exhibition consists of sculptures made of various image production techniques and a sound art.
