Nature photographs of the year 2023

The exhibition showcases 38 photographs, which were awarded in an annual competition. All of the Natural History Museum's exhibitions are free to enter.

The Nature Photograph of the year 2023 is Jethro Luhtaa's "Gate to the mountain", which is a classic and strong scenery photograph of a mountain in Lapland. The photograph's atmosphere and arrangement caught the jury's eye at a first glance. Luhtaa was at a photography trip in Finnish Lapland and while he was climbing to the mountain summit, dark clouds started to gather around the mountain, swallowing it in whole. The moment passed quickly, and for once Luhtaa felt that he was in a right place at the right time, and that's what a great nature photograph is all about.

The Nature photograph of the year 2023 competition consisted of 11 089 photos from 690 different photographers. As usual, the competition had nine different categories. Out of these categories the jury picked 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and honorary awards. Out of the category winners they picked the Nature Photograph of the Year.
