Emma Helle’s captivating sculptures burst with life.
The artist brings a breath of fresh air to traditional sculpture and its interpretations of gender with playful references to art historical styles and myths, to sacred and secular imagery. Helle highlights overlooked figures from art history and shapes alternative narratives for us. The feminine figures in wood and clay are both graceful and unrefined, active participants. They are surrounded by flourishing vegetation, and sometimes melt into imaginative metamorphoses. The colourful glaze, gilding, and painted surfaces accentuate the works’ baroque motion and drama.
The exhibition at Turku Art Museum is supported by the Finnish Heritage Agency.
