A century of Ursa – a century of astronomy

Helsinki Observatory, Helsinki

The Ursa Astronomical Association turns 100 years old!

A hundred years ago, space research was undergoing a major shift and our modern scientific world view was emerging. It was an opportune time for founding the Ursa Astronomical Association to explain the changing view of the universe and to answer questions evoked by the new interest in the wonders of space. How big is the universe? Where do stars get their energy? Is there life elsewhere?

Ursa began as an idea among a few space enthusiasts. In the past hundred years it has grown into a significant ”astronomical information office”, bringing together amateur astronomers as well as the curious general public. In the same period we have discovered most of what we now know about the universe.

The exhibition is dominated by a long timeline, visualizing the history of Ursa and astronomy. Excerpts from the 1925 German educational science film The Wonders of Creation are also shown at the exhibition. Ursa bought the rights to the film in 1933 and showed it at cinemas around Finland.
