Petra Koivisto – Notes

Rauma Art Museum, Rauma

  • 22.11.2021–31.1.2022

Ulvila-born Petra Koivisto (b. 1975) works on a large-scale monotype. Monotype is a method of art graphics that does not produce series, but individual prints. The image is painted or rolled onto a plate from which it is printed on a press on paper. A single, unique print is created.

Notes exhibition opens at the upstairs of the Rauma Art Museum in November. The exhibition emphasizes the large size of Koivistos works. The largest prints are 2 meters wide. Her studio in Luopajrvi, Jalasjrvi, has one of the largest graphic presses in Finland. Koivisto is fascinated by the unpredictability of this technique. Technical know-how can be developed endlessly, but there are still surprises in the drafting phase.

In my work, a tile is like a blank page in a diary or notebook. I dont design or sketch an image, but I want my work to be as free as possible, happening in an instant. I let things and events seen and experienced affect my work. The rolling of the tile and the paint layers are like thoughts in layers,” Koivisto says of her work.

Petra Koivisto has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Finland. She has held numerous solo exhibitions, participated in group exhibitions, received significant grants and her works are in public collections. Notes is her first solo exhibition in Satakunta.
