High-Flying Finns

Ski Museum, Lahti

  • 14.1.2019–30.8.2021

The photography exhibition "High-Flying Finns" illuminates the history of ski jumping from the 1920's to the 1990's.

Over the decades, ski jumping has evolved from a pastime of young daredevils to a professional sport. Throughout its history, ski jumping has involved strong emotions: joy, admiration, concentration, tension, excitement and the sense of fellowship.

In the 1950s and 1960s Finland ski jumpers were comparable to rock and movie stars. Ski jumpers were young urban daredevils that had style and grace. The sport had a dramatic and theatrical flair that was lacking in the cross-country skiing scene.
