Matias Karsikas – Glass Forest

The Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimki

  • 5.11.2022–31.12.2022

Matias Karsikas (b. 1989) is a sculptor and designer. Glass Forest is an exhibition featuring his
sculptures and wall reliefs.

Three elements are combined in his sculptures: hot-worked glass, glazed ceramics and unworked wood. The materials flow together in dialogue with crystals born in the furnace, creating a world of delicious minutiae that evokes flora, fauna and the hues of natural minerals.

The forest theme finds expression not in tree shapes or landscapes, but in the organic textures and nuanced surfaces, which are reminiscent of moss, lichen or snow. Karsikas is intrigued by the idea of manipulating materials so that the final result straddles a borderland between the organic and the artificial.
