The Modern Woman
Turku Art Museum, Turku
- 10.6.2022–28.8.2022
The Modern Woman presents the pioneering role of Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946), Ellen Thesleff (1869–1954), Sigrid Schauman (1877–1979) and Elga Sesemann (1922–2007) in Finnish art at the turn of the 20th century and in its next decades.
The artists were exceptionally international, they travelled unaccompanied and painted through their lives. The exhibition delves into the role of women in the midst of the social, political and cultural changes of the era. The subject of the study is also how it was possible for a woman in Finland to create an independent career as an artist. The topics are intertwined with the debate on the status and opportunities of women, which remains a topical and globally important issue.
The Modern Woman is produced in collaboration with Ateneum Art Museum / Finnish National Gallery. The exhibition in Turku is an updated version of Ateneum Art Museum’s successful touring exhibition, curated by Anu Utriainen, senior researcher at Ateneum. It will also be updated with works from the collection of Turku Art Museum.
