Unforeseen. Home Treasures from the Museum Collections

North Karelian Museum Hilma, Joensuu

  • 12.5.2022–28.8.2022

This exhibition is based on donated objects that have not been on display before in the entire 105-year history of North Karelia Museum.

The common theme for all the memorabilia in this exhibition is home and living – the oldest pieces represent the more unusual decorative objects from late 19th century bourgeois homes, e.g. a fireplace cover folding screen and a tobacco table. Many of the more recent objects may bring back memories, perhaps you had the same coffee mug, plate, vase or electric mixer at your grandmothers home, your summer cottage or your home. Three interiors built for the exhibition are based on the donations of entire interiors from private homes. The objects in the kitchen interior represent the turn of the 1940s–1950s, and the living room and bedroom represent the Finnish interior decoration style of the turn of the 1950s-1960s.

Kitchenware and linen are naturally things that are associated with home. Brands such as Arabia and Marimekko are especially displayed in this exhibition. Delightful, small hand embroidered tablecloths and towels represent older household textiles. Radios became more common at the end of the 1920s in Finnish homes: the Philips radio with its speakers put on display is exactly from that time. On top of these items, there is also a range of home electronics from a floor waxing machine to a once very trendy bread machine.

Unforeseen objects illustrate what kind of home items have been gifted to the museum and such donated objects also show what has been considered worth preserving. From the treasure cave of our exhibition, you will find part of the jewellery donated to the museum as well as a Vanitas-arrangement symbolising the tangible memories left behind to the next generations from our fleeting lives.
