Marjatta Hanhijoki: Visibly So

Kunsthalle Helsinki, Helsinki

  • 13.11.2021–2.1.2022

In the world of Marjatta Hanhijoki, seemingly minor matters expand into meaningful stories, something small becomes great, and warmth fills the air.

Marjatta Hanhijokis (b. 1948) works are overflowing with storytelling and snippets of tales. The sharp-sighted artists creations bind together delicious details, wider cultural-historical knowledge, and mundane flashes in an enchanting manner.

The exhibition Visibly So is a wide look into Hanhijokis artistic career, including watercolours, charcoal drawings, graphic works and photographs from five decades.

The artistic themes that Hanhijoki has worked on from the early stages of her career are presented in the various exhibition spaces of Kunsthalle Helsinki as their own entities. The exhibition features colourful interiors and still lifes, warm-hearted portraits, the playful world of children, and other themes ranging from Japan to freshwater pearl mussels and skylarks at night.

Hanhijoki is known for her detailed portrayals of interiors. Everyday poetic stills invite the spectators to witness an environment with new perception. The artefacts displayed in the rooms offer the attentive viewer the joy of discovery –– objects reappear from one work to another, subtle references are made to art history, signs of life outside the frames come to view.

One of the halls has been named the Childrens Room, where paintings and graphic prints are hung lower and small chairs invite the youngest visitors to sit and read books, which Hanhijoki herself will also read out loud during special storytelling hours. The Childrens Room also has a drawing table for children to dive into their own creations.
