Ars Nova, Turku

  • 9.6.2021–26.9.2021

The 54-minute long poetic film Nummer veertien, home is a unique tribute to the Polish composer Frdric Chopin.

Guido van der Werve is one of the most widely exhibited artists currently working with film. His works have been shown extensively in venues such as the Kunsthalle Basel, MoMA/PS1, the Venice Biennial, Performa, the Moscow Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial and Manifesta. His poetic film Nummer veertien, home (2012) is now presented for the first time in Finland, in the Aboa Vetus Ars Nova Museum in Turku.

The 54-minute long film is a unique tribute to the Polish composer Frdric Chopin. In his film Guido van der Werve follows the route of Chopins heart in opposite direction, running, biking and swimming nearly 1 500 kilometres from Warsaws Church of the Holy Cross to Pariss Pre Lachaise cemetery. For Chopin died and was buried in Paris in 1849, but his heart was smuggled by his sister to Warsaw and buried in the composers homeland according to his request.

The film follows the structure of Van der Werves own composition, a requiem in three movements and twelve acts. The beautifully Romantic requiem is performed by various small orchestras and choirs that the artist encounters along his journey. The narrative includes scenes drawing from the fate of Alexander the Great, who also died on foreign soil, as well as reflection on the artists own life.

44-year-old Dutch artist Guido van der Werve is a filmmaker, composer and a visual artist who currently lives and works in Berlin and in Jms. He is renowned for his multidimensional, video-documented performances of pushing his body to its limits through acts of endurance. His works are characterized by long meditative shots and a refusal to work with actors.

Being also a classically trained pianist, in 2007 the artist began composing musical arrangements to accompany select video works. Besides visual arts and music Van der Werve has pursued studies in industrial design, archaeology and Russian language and literature at several universities in the Netherlands.

Up to this point, Guido van der Werve has created seventeen chronologically named elaborate works, which have been exhibited and screened widely, finding recognition in both the art and film world. He has received many awards including the Volkskrant Beeldende kunst prijs in 2007, a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Art in 2008, the Prix International dArt Contemporain of the Foundation Prince Pierre de Monaco in 2010, the Charlotte Koehler Prijs from the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds in 2012. The film Nummer veertien, home won the Grand Prix (Gouden Kalf) prize for best short film at the Netherlands Film Festival in 2013 .

Nummer veertien, home is exhibited in the Takkahuone Gallery in Aboa Vetus Ars Nova Museum from 9th June to 26th September 2021. The film lasts 54 minutes and it starts at the top of every hour.
