Temporary Exhibition: The Secret of the Gut
Heureka, the Finnish Science Centre, Vantaa
- 10.10.2020–5.9.2021
The Secret of the Gut exhibition, based on the book by Giulia and Jill Enders, sheds light on the functioning of this often undervalued system and helps us understand how we can use this knowledge to make ourselves feel better.
The gut has the bad reputation of being smelly. However, we rarely give much thought to how important it is. Now, at Heureka, you can get to know this part of us that is so close but still unreachable. In through the mouth and out through the rear! In between, you will learn about the digestive process, intestinal microbes and the wellbeing of your gut.
When examined closely, the functioning of the gut can even be considered intelligent. Not only that, but it is densely populated! There are billions of bacteria living in our intestines, and this microflora affects our daily lives – not only our physical, but also our mental wellbeing. Our coexistence with our microbes is so intense that we can actually talk about “us” rather than “me”: without our microbes we could not survive!
