The dream of tractors came true
The exhibition tells us about the Porkkalafarmers hard work to clear the fields and the forests
Karl-Göran Karlsson was 14 years old when Porkkala was handed back. Hard work was required to bring the fields and the forests into shape again. The Porkkala farmers were granted priority when buying tractors, this photo shows Karl-Göran sitting on his family’s newly bought Fordson-tractor. In the background the former cowshed which the Russians had remodelled into a canteen.
- It was impossible to sleep in the big dwelling house, we could not even close the doors there. There were a lot of keys on the windowsills, but no locks. The Russians had built a lot of houses on the farm but we decided to sleep in a room in the former stable. We assumed there were less lice. In this room there were eight layers of wallpapers.
