Take down the sails - memoirs of a bygone world
During the essential changes in seafaring in the 19th and early 20th century the men on board sailing ships realized that they were experiencing something that would soon disappear.
Seafaring experienced essential changes in the 19th and early 20th century. Ships from Finland sailed further and further out, steamers gradually replaced sailing ships, and new skills were required from the sailors. The men on board sailing ships realized that they were experiencing something that would soon disappear. Some of them decided to record their experiences in photos and memoirs.
Individual persons and communities recorded seafaring traditions in Rauma and the Satakunta province, each from their own premises. Thanks to those who remembered the bygone world for us, we can now exhibit photos and descriptions of seafaring in the sail ship times. Why not make acquaintances with the men themselves?
